MORE ABUSE COMMITTED BY TEENAGE NURSING HOME AIDES IN SMALL-TOWN MINNESOTA

Posted by: Laurence Harmon on 9/25/2009

The Glenwood Village Care Center (at left) is a 75-bed nursing home in Glenwood, Minnesota, a forgettable little town about 130 miles west of Minneapolis. It serves the 2500 or so residents of Glenwood, and it’s regarded by U S News and World Report as a “Best Nursing Home.”(http://tinyurl.com/ydwzbz3)

The project website notes that the facility offers “a range of services designed to keep our Residents as independent and active as possible. We offer double and single rooms that are cheery and comfortable. Our Staff provides quality nursing care to our Residents, making their stay as comfortable and home-like as possible.” (http://tinyurl.com/yaaot3j)

A September 18, 2009 article in the Minneapolis Star Tribune (http://tinyurl.com/ktc756) reported that a teenage aide at the Center had been fired after reports that she had physically and emotionally abused frail residents, specifically by telling one that she’s be seeing her dead husband “soon,” and threatening to send another resident to jail, where she could be "raped."

This is the fourth incident in rural Minnesota in just over a year that the Minnesota Health Department has found that teenage nursing home aides have physically and emotionally abused nursing home residents. Two of the cases have resulted in criminal charges.
