The website claims a 78.2 percent success rate within 48 hours, and a 68 percent success rate thereafter. Here's how it works:

Immediately after notifying Find Toto personnel, they "alert thousands of neighbors within minutes." The website asks this question: "Can you notify 10,000 neighbors in 30 minutes? WE CAN!"

They use a location-specific mapping system plus the most-current household database, and employ a call system that's used for emergency broadcasts. Check 'em out here.

"Cheaters," of course, are those cheap, over-the-counter eyeglasses we can buy at the corner drugstore.

Nor surprisingly, restaurants are accommoding their elderly customers by keeping a supply of visual aids--mini-flashlights, magnifying glasses, and "cheaters"--on hand. Sometimes, they simply give up and increase the font sizes on their menus. As one Minneapolis restauranteur put it, "It seems like if I do anything under size 12 in the font, I get complaints. I'm sure in 15 years I'll be one of the guests complaining about not being able to read the menu."

However accommodating restaurants and bars may be to their Boomer customers, they're reluctant to adjust the lighting. After all, how many of us get better looking in harsh lighting?

The most recent Field Poll found that nearly one-half of California's likely voters now support the legislation.

"The numbers have flipped (on Proposition 19) since our July poll," Mark DiCamillo, the poll's director, told the San Francisco Chronicle.
Proposition 19 would allow those over age 21 to possess no more than one ounce of the drug, as well as operate a "grow room" for personal consumption, and permit cities and counties to regulate the cultivation of marijuana and tax its distribution.
BY 50 PERCENT?!

Purdue University experts have discovered a great approach to lowering 50 percent of winter heating costs! They're at work on a new research project that promises to reduce heating bill by 50 percent for those of us who live in very cold climates. The study, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, builds on previous work that began about five years ago at Purdue's Ray W. Herrick Laboratories.

Heat pumps provide heating in winter and cooling in summer, but they aren't very efficient in extreme cold climates. The Purdue research involves changes to the way heat pumps operate to ensure they are more cost-effective in very cold climates.

The modern technology works by modifying the conventional vapor-compression cycle behind standard air conditioning and refrigeration.

The common vapor-compression cycle has four stages:

1° Refrigerant is compressed as a vapor, then

2° Condenses into a liquid, and

3° Expands to a combination of liquid and vapor, and finally

4° Evaporates

The project investigates two cooling approaches during the compression process. For the first experiment, relatively large volumes of oil are injected into the compressor to absorb heat generated throughout the compression stage. In the second, a mixture of liquid and vapor refrigerant from the expansion stage is injected at various points during compression to supply cooling.

The new heat pumps might be half as expensive to operate as heating technologies now utilized in cold regions where natural gas is unavailable and people use electric heaters and liquid propane.

As we wait for the results of the Purdue research, here are some suggestions to improve you home air quality and save energy:

    Ensure your thermostat is located in an area that is not too cold or hot.
    Install an automatic timer to maintain the thermostat at 68 degrees during the day and 55 degrees at night.
    Use storm or thermal windows in colder areas. The layer of air between the windows acts as insulation, helping to keep the heat inside where you want it.
    If you haven't done so already, insulate your attic and all outside walls.
    Insulate floors over unheated spaces, e.g., your basement, crawl spaces, and your garage.
    Close off the attic, garage, basement, spare bedrooms and storage areas.
    Heat only the rooms that you use during the winter.
    Seal gaps around pipes, wires, vents or other openings that could transfer your heat to unheated areas.

Most people are unaware that common indoor air quality practices help reduce home air heating costs too:

    Rain can bring moisture indoors, creating dampness and mold spores, which are bad healthy indoor air. Check your roof, foundation and basement or crawlspace once a year to catch leaks or moisture problems and route water away from your home's foundation.
    Help to keep asthma triggers away from your house by fixing leaks and drips as soon as they start. Standing water and moist encourage the development of dust mites and fungus, both common triggers that can worsen asthma. Make use of a dehumidifier or AC unit when needed, and clean both regularly.
    High levels of moisture in your home increase dampness and mold growth, which not only damage your house but threaten health. Install and run exhaust fans in bathrooms to remove unhealthy moisture and odors out of your home.
    Ventilate your kitchen stove directly outside or open a kitchen window when you cook. Keeping exhaust -- including cooking odors and particles -- outside of your home prevents dangerous fumes and particles from harming you or your family.

A companion piece to its recent listing of the TOP 50 WEBSITES (2010), "Time" magazine lists/describes/pictures the 50 WORST CARS OF ALL TIME.

Just to whet your appetite, here's the "Times" list of the worst cars since 1990:

1995 Ford Explorer
1997 GM EV1
1997 Plymouth Prowler
1995 Fiat Multipla
2000 Ford Excursion
2001 Jaguar X-Type
2001 Pontiac Aztek
2002 BMW 7-Series
2003 Hummer H2
2004 Chevrolet SSR

And if, by chance, you're the once-proud owner of the '03 Hummer H2 (#9 on the list), here's "Time's" review:

One struggles to think of a worse vehicle at a worse time. Introduced shortly after 9/11 — an event whose causes were tangled in America's unquenchable thirst for oil — the Hummer H2 sent all the wrong signals. It was/is arrogantly huge, overtly militaristic, openly scornful of the common good. As a vehicle choice, the H2 was a spiteful reactionary riposte to notions that, you know, maybe we all shouldn't be driving tanks that get 10 miles per gallon. Not surprisingly, the green-niks struck back. A Hummer dealership was torched in Southern California. The H2 was also a PR catastrophe for GM, who happened to be repossessing and crushing the few EV1 electric cars at the time. It all contributed to GM's emerging image as the Dick Cheney of car companies.

Many scientists believe that the 125-year lifespan, as well as the earlier decline in health, is caused by the gradual shortening of our "telomeres," which are the structures at the ends of our chromosomes. This shortening is believed to be the so-called "clock of aging" in our bodies.

The good news is that a human cell that does not undergo this shortening will divide indefinitely, which means that it would be literally immortal. Bottom line: If we could find a way to stop--or reverse--this shortening, we could live forever!

Enter Sierra Sciences, LLC, a biotechnology company founded in 1999. The company is dedicated to preventing--or reversing--cellular aging, ultimately curing diseases associated with human aging, including the aging process itself. Here's how: Our reproductive cells don't experience shortening of telomeres; they don't age. They have an enzyme, "telomerase," which re-lengthens the telomeres as they shorten. Sierra Sciences is searching for pharmaceuticals that will produce telemorase in all our cells.

If successful, the Fountain of Youth that Ponce de Leon thought he had found when he landed in St. Augustine, Florida, is actually 2,800 miles northwest, in Reno, Nevada. That's where you'll find the home of Sierra Sciences.

Doctor Lee Lindquist, instructor of medicine at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, obsererves that a cruise ship "could be considered a floating assisted living facility. "Seniors who enjoy travel, have good or excellent cognitive function and require some assistance with activities of daily living are the ideal candidates for cruise ship care," Lindquist says.

The initial rumor was that a 12-story apartment building in Shanghai, China toppled over after work had begun to build an adjacent parking structure.

Truth or Fiction determined that the structure was actually 13 stories tall.

The China Daily news reported that the building collapsed at 5:30 a.m., June 27, 2009. One worker was killed.

The news report noted that a preliminary investigation blamed "poor construction" and "improper planning" for the collapse.

This gadget, an oxygen generator left over from a NASA Mars program that Bloom Energy has converted into a fuel cell, is said to be capable of powering the average high-consumption U. S. home.

The box has two inexpensive ceramic disks that are painted with secret "inks"--black on one side, green on the other. The disks are separated by a metal alloy, and then stacked into a cube. A 64-stack cube can power a small business.

Skeptical? Many are, but FedEx and Wal-mart have purchased and installed the $700,000 cells, with Southern California energy companies on the waiting list.

The two-year research project found that two main byproducts in the whiskey distillation process--pot ale, a liquid produced by the copper stills, and draff, the spent grains--create butanol, which can be used as fuel.

Scientists claim that biobutanol will be the next-generation biofuel, producing 30 percent more power than ethanol. Martin Tangney, who directed the research, says that "The most likely form of distribution of the biofuel would be a blend of perhaps 5 percent or 10 percent of the biofuel with petrol or diesel, but 5 percent or 10 percent means less oil, which would make a big, big difference."

Scotland's $6.2 billion whiskey industry is one of the country's largest, producing 1.6 billion liters of pot ale and nearly 200,000 metric tons of draff.

A recent MetLife report titled “Housing for the 55+ Market: Trends and Insights on Boomers and Beyond," found that about two-thirds of respondents plan to age in place, while only 12 percent plan to buy another home. Most want to want to live in close-in suburbs, and less than 10 percent want to live in a central city. Here are other findings:

Nearly 80 percent of respondents want a single-story home;

The preferred floorplan is a 1,900 square foot, three-bedroom unit, with the master bedroom on the first floor;

The median price respondents plan to spend for the new house is $189,426;

Preferred features include the following:

In-unit washer/dryer;

Storage space;

Easy-open windows;

First-floor master suite;

Easy usable thermostat.

About one-half either don't care about the environmental impact of building a home, or are concerned about the environment, but the concern doesn't influence their purchase.  A mere 12 percent said they'd pay more--an average amount of $6,732--for an environmentally-friendly house;

Proximity to shopping is the most important consideration for the location of the housing, followed by proximity to medical care.

Perhaps most surprising is the fact that 83 percent of respondents rated high-speed Internet access as "somewhat" to "very important."

"Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead," an award-winning documentary about Joe Cross, who's 100 pounds overweight, loaded up on steroids and suffering from a debilitating autoimmune disease. The film is a chronicle of Joe's personal mission to regain his health. Joe drops the weight and cures himself of chronic hives by following a juice fast for 60 days.

Messianic, Cross drives across the country, sharing his story of redemption. He meets up with Phil Staples, a 429-pound truck driver, and tries to get Staples to begin his own juicing lifestyle. At first, Phil rejects the idea, despite the fact that he has high blood pressure, is morbidly obese, and diabetic. Phil's father describes him as depressed and borderline suicidal, "using food as his weapon of choice."

Finally convinced to try a 10-day juice fast, Phil eventually loses more than 200 pounds, cures all of his health problems, and finds that he has incredible energy and a positive outlook. He quits his job to open a juice bar in his community.

In a recent article about the documentary, Margie King, Philadelphia Nutrition Examiner, notes that "Juice fasting is an extreme diet option. For those who are morbidly obese or who suffer with a chronic condition that medication can’t resolve, a juice fast for 10 days or even up to 30 days may offer hope.

"For most people it should not be a long term lifestyle, although for some that works. Most people at a minimum will lose weight, feel more energetic and optimistic. Even short of a complete fast, juicing fresh fruits and vegetables as a part of your daily routine, will also improve weight, energy and healing."
It’s 165 feet tall, 244 feet wide, 647 feet long—more than the length of two football fields!--filled with 14 million cubic feet of helium, and capable of carrying a 400-ton payload at an estimated top speed of 175 mph. It takes off and lands like a helicopter—straight up, straight down—so it doesn’t need a runway. The Aeroscraft is scheduled to come to the travel market this year.

Billed as a “private air yacht,” the Aeroscraft could offer ocean cruises with luxury accommodations, “skimming just above forests, canyons and cities,” the website (http://tinyurl.com/587xz2) dreams, “then delivering its passengers to inland resorts and national parks hundred of miles from sea."

Or the versatile Aeroscraft could also serve as an “executive office in the sky,” with a high-tech business and conference center decked out with computerized offices, videoconferencing capabilities, a conference room that could handle 100 business travelers, and a transformable interior and personal stateroom.

The Aeroscraft uses six turbofan jets to lift it to its cruising altitude, where it’s driven by huge rearward electric propellers powered by a renewable resource, such as hydrogen fuel sells. A complex buoyancy-management system will provide precise adjustments in-flight to account for changes in outside conditions and passenger movement.

Whose idea was this, anyway? The Aeroscraft is the invention of Ukrainian-born Igor Pasternak, president of Worldwide Aeros Corporation in Canoga Park, California. Worldwide Aeros’s product line includes heavy-lift cargo planes, FAA-Certified airships, and tethered balloon systems.

Pasternak marvels at his baby’s future: “You can land on the snow, you can land on the water. This is the new single-seat Volkswagen, the “VW 1L,” set to be introduced this year. It’s not a toy or a concept car. It’s a highly aerodynamic, tear-shaped, road-proven automobile that will sell for the equivalent of $600!
It looks a lot like a jet canopy, with headlights and tires seemingly copied from a mid-priced bicycle. The body is made from carbon fiber, with a sparse interior that seats two—the passenger behind the driver. It’s outfitted with airbags, antilock brakes and stability control, but creature comforts—think air conditioning!—will likely be optional.
<trackback:ping />

HERE'S THE FUTURE OF THE NURSING HOME--MAYBE.
This is the Holy Wisdom Monastery, a 30,000-square foot, two-story structure with a detached, 4,000 square foot remodeled maintenance building, situated on a 130-acre parcel in Madison, Wisconsin. Last month, it received the U. S. Green Building Council's most coveted award--a Platinum rating, which makes the monastery the highest-rated LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) New Construction building in the United States.

The Sisters intentionally sought the Platinum rating, believing that the highest level of sustainable construction "fits perfectly within the values of 1,500 years of Benedictine tradition." In addition, they hoped that the accomplishment would capture sufficient media interest "(to) allow us to educate others about care for the earth."

Following are the "green" construction features of the monastery:

    The original building, Benedict House, was demolished; 99.75 percent of the 60,000-square foot structure was recycled or reused;

    The new building is “right-sized” for the population, and provides 50 percent less space than Benedict House.

    85 percent of regularly occupied spaces is "daylighted" with Andersen Windows, each of which was customized according to its location and orientation to the sun, thereby reducing glare and minimizing solar heat gain inside the building.

    The chapel windows are operable to expel hot air and reduce the need for air conditioning. Storm water runoff is reduced to 13 percent below pre-development levels.

    The geothermal heating and cooling system employs 39 closed-loop wells, each of which is 300 feet deep.

The Sisters' goal is to eventually provide 100 percent of the monastery’s net energy needs from on-site, renewable sources.

In early November last year, 25 Real Good Chairs were dropped off on New York City street corners—a clear invitation to attentive curb miners.

(If you look closely, you'll see a Real Good red chair, just right of center, patiently waiting for its own personal miner.)

The catch? The chairs were outfitted with GPS homing devices, which allowed folks all over the planet to track their whereabouts.

Turning a fruit into a juice, they say, keeps the flavor, but "loses the substance, the power. Even the very best fruit juice isn't as nutritious as the fruit it originally came from, because the fiber that makes a piece of fruit so filling has been stripped away: Instead of filling your belly like an apple or an orange, juice just passes through your gastrointestinal tract like a little stream of sugar. . . . The sweet melody is intact, but the soul is lost. So as a rule, always choose the original version (that would be the fruit) over the Muzak version (that would be the juice)."

They go on to say that juice isn't a "terrible" choice--we can still get our daily quota of vitamins and minerals from it. The problem is that manufacturers simply mix a lot of water and sugar with a tiny bit of flavoring, and call it "juice."

With this in mind, David and Matt compiled a list of the best and worst juices at the supermarket, then added a healthier alternative to each. Here goes:

WORST CRANBERRY COCKTAIL: Ocean Spray Cran-Apple (8 fl oz); 130 calories; 32 g sugars. According to Dave and Matt, Ocean Spray markets a variety of cranberry juice blends, all of which are "polluted with unruly loads of added sugar. RECOMMENDED ALTERNATIVE. Ocean Spray’s Cranenergy, which has only 35 calories and nine grams of sugars.

For the list of WORST MIXED-BERRY BLEND, WORST LEMONADE (Hint: it's probably the one you're buying--Minute Maid Lemonade in the 20-ounce bottle, which delivers a whopping 250 calories and 67.5 grams of sugars), WORST MIXED-BERRY BLEND, WORST GRAPE JUICE, WORST "JUICE IMPOSTER," and WORST CANNED JUICE, together with their RECOMENDED ALTERNATIVES, go here

<trackback:ping />

NEW WEBCAM BRINGS 3D VIEWING TO YOUR DESKTOP!

WHAT IS IT? The Minoru 3D webcam uses two cameras to create a three-dimensional view—just like the human eye!
While people tend to joke about these "senior moments," the humor camouflages an underlying fear of Alzheimer’s disease. Their concern isn’t unfounded: about five percent of people age 65 and older (and a much larger proportion over 80) develop Alzheimer’s. However, there is mounting evidence that memory lapses don’t necessarily foreshadow dementia.

What often leads to these lapses are "brain busters," such as fatigue, depression, poor physical health and medication. Stress is another factor getting closer scrutiny. Researchers at Yale Medical School, for instance, recently reported in the journal Science that stress activates a brain protein called kinase C, or PKC, that can undermine short-term memory. Other researchers have found that sustained high levels of the stress hormone cortisol can damage the hippocampus, a part of the brain that’s central to memory.

Scientists increasingly believe that it’s possible to fight brain busters by taking control of your life and reducing stress. What works is a strategy to improve overall health—and to stimulate the brain with exercises that have been called "aerobics for the mind."

Here’s a 10-step memory workout based on the latest scientific findings:

Exercise regularly. Aerobic activity—walking, dancing, biking, for at least 20 minutes three times a week—increases blood flow and the delivery of oxygen, sugar (as glucose) and nutrients to the brain. Recent scientific studies have shown that aerobic fitness may reduce the loss of brain tissue common in aging.

Stick to a healthy diet. Avoid sugar and saturated fat.
